Beginner’s Mind 1 & 2 are a pair of compositions written in response to Ryan Winnen’s solo show Beginner’s Mind. The pieces are a collection of gestures that move freely–and at times in tandem with each other–without regard for the conventional musical constraints of time signature, tempo and key. Instead, these gestures, or sequences, mimic the discrete repetition found throughout nature. Each composition consists of two improvised performances on the keyboard. Voiced through a variety of synthesizers, these performances control a collection of sounds with subtle variations from note to note. The inconsistencies in pace and voice create a space within which there is a changing perception of time.
